Most oil trades today chase the crude price itself — the energy majors, oil ETFs, and crude futures. But Goldman's point is subtler: the bottleneck isn't crude supply, it's the ability to refine crude into gasoline and diesel, and that tightness could persist into next year. Refiners earn the spread between what they pay for crude and what they charge for fuel, so a persistent product shortage pads their margins even if crude prices wobble. That makes refiners a potentially cleaner and longer-lasting way to play this oil shock than the crowded majors trade.
