Middle East conflict chokes oil supply while gold loses its shine — long energy

Renewed hostilities between the US and Iran are directly threatening a major global oil chokepoint, causing oil prices to surge. This spike in energy costs is sparking fears of a new inflation wave, which traders believe could force the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates. Because higher interest rates make non-yielding assets less attractive, gold is actually falling despite the geopolitical tension. This creates a clear divergence where energy producers stand to benefit from rising oil prices, making energy stocks a strong tactical buy while the geopolitical conflict persists.
Strategy approach
Build a rule-based strategy that enters long XLE on D1 when front-month crude oil futures (CL=F) make a 10-day high and gold (GLD) closes down >1% on the same day. Exit when GLD recovers its 10-day high or after a 21-day max hold. Apply a 5% trailing stop.
