When fear spikes in the oil market, two things happen: the actual physical supply of oil gets squeezed by events like the drone attacks knocking out a fifth of export capacity, and the cost of insurance on oil stocks skyrockets. Instead of just buying shares and hoping they go up, investors can sell put options on cash-rich majors like Chevron to collect that inflated fear premium upfront. If the stock goes up, you keep the cash; if it drops, you buy a highly profitable company at a discount.
