OPEC pumps more while producers dump stockpiles — short oil on global glut fears

Thesis

The Bloomberg article quotes the CEO of TotalEnergies saying Middle East producers are 'desperate to sell' off their oil stockpiles, which instantly adds a massive wave of supply to the market. On top of that, the MarketWatch article notes OPEC+ is continuing to raise their production quotas even as prices tumble. To make matters worse for oil prices, the Reuters headline about easyJet agreeing to a takeover bid signals that airlines are looking to merge and survive rather than aggressively expand their flight routes. If airlines aren't rapidly adding new flights, they don't need extra fuel. A massive oversupply of crude hitting the market with no matching jump in demand is a textbook recipe for lower oil prices.

Strategy approach

Build a trend-following short strategy on USO (or CL futures) using the Daily timeframe. Entry: Price closes below the lower Bollinger Band (20, 2) AND the 10-day EMA crosses below the 50-day EMA. Exit: 10% profit target or 5% stop-loss. Filter: Only enter when backwardation/contango spreads indicate oversupply.
