Stagflation — the ugly combination of high inflation and weak growth — is historically brutal for companies whose sales depend on consumers having spare cash, but companies selling toothpaste, food and utilities keep earning through it. Warsh's blunt 'we're serious' message means no rescue from the Fed, so the headwinds for discretionary spending stay in place. This is a different trade from the already-published energy, gold and Treasury ideas: instead of betting on the inflation itself, it hides in the corner of the stock market that inflation hurts least. Staples also carry pricing power, meaning they can pass higher costs to customers without losing sales.
