Investors are questioning whether massive spending on artificial intelligence will actually pay off, triggering a widespread selloff. We are seeing a clear flight from risk, with major server and hardware equipment makers like Dell and Super Micro giving back huge recent gains. With investors eagerly awaiting Big Tech earnings to see exactly how much they plan to keep spending on AI, the fear in the market is compounding and dragging the whole sector down. When a sector breaks lower as a group on fading momentum, betting against the laggards offers a strong opportunity to profit from the panic.
Strategy approach
Build a swing-trading strategy that takes a short position in a basket of semiconductor and AI hardware equities (AVGO, AMD, SMCI, DELL). Enter short when the PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index (SOX) breaks below its 20-day simple moving average on the daily timeframe. Exit the trade entirely if the SOX index closes back above that 20-day moving average, or enforce a hard 10% stop loss from the entry price to limit upside risk.
