Most investors see a hot jobs report as bad news for stocks, but banks are the exception: they make money on the spread between what they pay depositors and what they earn on loans, and that spread widens when rates climb and stay elevated. Short-term yields just hit their highest levels since January 2025, signaling the market expects the Fed to keep policy tight or even tighten further. Rather than joining the rate-fear selloff already covered elsewhere, this is the second-order beneficiary trade that rising rates directly reward.
