When a Fed official explicitly calls for rate hikes and a $47 billion asset manager publicly shorts Treasuries, the message is that bond prices are heading south. US economic growth is outpacing the rest of the world, which typically pushes interest rates up and bond prices down. By shorting a long-term Treasury ETF, traders can position for falling bond prices as the market prices in stronger growth and higher for longer rates.
Strategy approach
Build a rule-based strategy that goes short TLT (long-duration Treasury ETF) on D1 when 10-year Treasury yields rise above their 20-day high and a Fed speaker publicly advocates for higher rates. Hold for up to 30 days with a 3% stop loss on the short position.
