A rate hike landing on top of Treasury yields already near 5% has pushed bond prices to their lowest levels in almost twenty years, and the government is now buying back its own bonds to prop them up — a sign the pressure is structural, not a one-day blip. Cheap oil is expensive money: high energy prices, huge corporate borrowing, and record debt issuance all keep pushing yields higher. The Fed's hawkish message under Warsh removes the main force that could rescue bonds. Until supply or oil breaks the trend, long-term bond prices are the path of least resistance to the downside.
