Chevron's profit beat is driven by soaring refining margins — the spread between cheap raw oil and expensive finished fuel. That spread stays wide when refining capacity is tight, and the same supply squeeze dynamics are pushing copper higher as global stockpiles shrink. Falling oil prices are actually a tailwind for Chevron's refining margins because input costs drop while output prices stay sticky. The copper tightness adds a second leg: the same AI data center buildout supercharging energy demand is also pulling copper into the U.S. ahead of potential tariffs. When real assets get scarce, the producers lever the squeeze.
