This is a fundamentally different signal from general geopolitical tension. Actual buyers are halting actual crude shipments because they cannot guarantee the safety of their vessels — meaning real barrels are being removed from the daily supply chain. India is one of the world's largest oil importers, so even a temporary pause forces them to scramble for replacement cargoes from other regions at premium prices. Strait of Hormuz disruption also hits distillate refining margins directly, as alternative routing becomes longer and more expensive. This is a pure supply-shock catalyst for diesel and heating oil.
Strategy approach
Build a momentum strategy that enters long ULE when front-month WTI crude (CL1) rises more than 1.5% in a single session while the Strait of Hormuz shipping-risk narrative is active. Hold for up to 10 trading days with a tight 4% trailing stop. Exit immediately if crude drops back below its 10-day moving average.
