Hot inflation keeps the Fed on a hiking path, and bond yields are already sitting near multiyear highs heading into the Fed meeting. Banks earn their money on the spread between what they charge borrowers and what they pay depositors, so rising yields tend to fatten that spread rather than squeeze it. While rate-hike fear hurts growth stocks, regional and large-cap banks have historically outperformed in the weeks after yields spike on inflation surprises. This is the rare corner of the market that benefits directly from the same news punishing everything else.
