AI hype meets reality as IBM, Google, and GE Vernova stumble — short the AI lagg

IBM just cut its full-year revenue forecast and missed earnings, showing that old-line tech is still struggling to monetize AI. At the exact same time, Alphabet shares dropped over 5% on AI-spending fears, and GE Vernova — the company selling power turbines to AI data centers — plunged after its own earnings miss. When widely different pieces of the AI ecosystem all stumble at once, it usually means investors are rethinking how much they're willing to pay for the AI story. The selling pressure tends to linger for days as big funds reposition.
Strategy approach
Build a short-term mean-reversion / momentum strategy that enters short on D1 for stocks that gapped down >5% post-earnings with heavy volume. Target the basket of AI-adjacent stocks that have recently missed on revenue or trimmed guidance (IBM, GEV, GOOGL). Enter at the open of the following session after the gap, hold for a max of 5 trading days, and exit on a close above the 5-day simple moving average or a 4% gain from entry. Set a 6% stop loss.
