At the same time, sticky inflation and a potential July rate hike from the Fed threaten to slam the brakes on economic growth by raising borrowing costs. This dual threat of higher energy bills and tighter financial conditions historically crushes consumer spending, making oil a momentum long whileconsumer-focused stocks face severe headwinds.
Strategy approach
Build a swing-trading strategy that enters long USO on D1 when front-month WTI crude makes a 5-day consecutive close higher (momentum build from supply fears) AND 2-year Treasury yields make a 10-day high (reflecting rate-hike bets). Exit conditions: 10% trailing stop or 21-day max hold. Alternatively, run a paired mean-reversion setup that goes short XLY (consumer discretionary) under the same entry triggers, exiting on a 5% bounce or 21-day max hold.
