The semiconductor sector is facing a reality check as even blowout earnings from industry leader TSMC are being heavily sold because they failed to clear an incredibly high bar. Reports confirm that AI jitters are causing a massive multi-trillion dollar rotation away from chip stocks and into the 'Magnificent 7' mega-cap tech stocks. With the broader market indices stalling and futures weighed down by these AI woes, the near-term momentum for chip manufacturers has shifted negative as investors take profits and de-risk from high-valuing hardware suppliers.
Strategy approach
Build a rule-based momentum strategy on D1 timeframe that enters short SMH (VanEck Semiconductor ETF) when it closes below its 20-day simple moving average after a down day where TSM gaps down on earnings. Exit the trade if SMH closes back above the 20-day SMA, with a 10% hard stop loss and a 21-day max holding period.
