Semiconductor equipment makers are being dumped to levels not seen in over a decade on fears that China will become self-sufficient in chipmaking tools — but this logic cuts both ways. ASML is literally the company whose technology China is desperately trying to replicate, making it irreplaceable in the near term, and J.P. Morgan now explicitly calls the selloff disproportionate. When the Nasdaq is paring losses while chip names still sink, it signals narrow panic rather than a system-wide collapse, and AMD's continued surge confirms AI-driven demand for chips is still accelerating. That sets up a classic contrarian bounce: the very companies essential to the AI buildout are trading as if demand is vanishing.
