A near-certain ECB hike is the setup, but the real trade is the gap between what economists expect and what bond markets are pricing: markets see a longer tightening cycle, fueled by the same Middle East oil spike pushing energy costs and inflation higher. When markets end up more hawkish than the consensus, rate-sensitive European sectors like utilities and real estate underperform, and the euro tends to strengthen as rate expectations rise. Positioning for that repricing, either by shorting Europe's borrowing-heavy sectors or holding the euro against currencies with more dovish central banks, captures the surprise rather than the already-known hike.
