IBM's massive earnings miss is sending shockwaves through the software and hardware industries, signaling that corporate tech spending is shifting in unpredictable ways. At the exact same time, chipmakers and server builders are plunging on fears that the massive boom in AI infrastructure spending is finally slowing down. When market leaders in both traditional tech and AI hardware drop this violently at the same time, it usually signals a broader retreat from expensive tech stocks as investors rush to lock in profits. This creates a strong downward momentum that favors betting against the companies that had the most hype during the AI boom.
Strategy approach
Build a swing trading strategy that enters short on equal-dollar positions across SMCI, AVGO, and MRVL on the D1 timeframe. Entry condition: the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) closes below its 20-day simple moving average AND the basket of these three stocks drops more than 5% in a single trading day. Exit condition: 10% profit target or a 5% hard stop loss, with a maximum holding period of 14 days.
