The Fed not only hiked a quarter point but officially penciled in another hike before year-end, so the tightening cycle is clearly not finished. Normally a resilient consumer would be good news, but here a hot 1.2% retail sales print does the opposite — it removes the excuse for the Fed to stop, since the economy clearly doesn't need lower rates. Every extra hike pushes mortgage costs higher while home prices are still elevated, crushing new-home demand. Homebuilders are the purest way to trade that squeeze, and with long-term borrowing costs hovering above 5%, the pressure on them is structural rather than a one-day headline.
