Netflix just beat earnings estimates and the stock still dropped 12%, showing that investors are in a punish-first mood where even good news gets sold. Bond yields are signaling that rate-hike fears are driving this behavior, making it extremely difficult to bet on a stock's direction heading into an earnings print. Amazon is now facing the same setup with its own earnings approaching, meaning the stock is likely to make a violent move but the direction is a coin flip. Instead of guessing up or down, an options strategy that profits from big movement in either direction lets you use the market's own anxiety to your advantage.
Strategy approach
Build an options strategy on AMZN that enters a long straddle (buy ATM call + ATM put) 3-5 days before the earnings report when the 10-year Treasury yield is above its 20-day moving average. Exit at the next day's open after the earnings release. Set the hold period to a maximum of 7 days.
