The ECB is actively hiking with inflation 'well above target,' and its own president is warning of more inflationary risk — so European rates are set to stay high or go higher. European banks earn the spread between lending rates and deposit rates, and that spread widens in exactly this environment, even as bond prices slide. Unlike US banks, where a Fed hike is a single event risk, Europe is in an ongoing tightening cycle that supports bank earnings for quarters. The bond selloff hurting everything else in Europe is therefore a tailwind, not a headwind, for the banking sector.
