Iran mining the Strait of Hormuz, tankers stuck — load up on big oil as supply gets squeezed
Iran has mined large parts of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical shipping lane for global oil. Massive oil tankers are stuck and may avoid the route entirely going forward, which could squeeze global oil supply.
Idea
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important oil shipping routes, and Iran has just mined large sections of it according to the Secretary of State. Giant oil tankers are already stuck and may not come back to the Middle East once they escape. When a key supply route gets physically blocked like this, it can meaningfully reduce the amount of oil reaching the market. Less supply with steady demand tends to push oil prices — and the shares of big oil companies — higher. This isn't a short-lived headline; mines take time to clear, and shipping companies may reroute permanently.
