Hormuz Strait mined, peace talks stalled — load up on US oil producers
The Strait of Hormuz — the narrow waterway that most Middle Eastern oil passes through — has been effectively blocked for over three months. Iran has now mined large sections of it, and peace talks are stalling as fresh fighting erupts.
Idea
About a fifth of the world's oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, and it's been blocked for over three months with no resolution in sight. Iran has now mined large sections of the strait, meaning even if a peace deal were struck tomorrow, it would take weeks to clear the waterway. That keeps oil supply tight and prices elevated. Major US oil producers like Exxon and Chevron benefit directly — they sell every barrel at the higher global price but don't rely on Middle Eastern shipping routes themselves. With the OECD also warning that the conflict is dragging on global growth, investors are rotating into energy stocks as a safe place to park money during the uncertainty.
